The SPJS is headed by Swapan Mullick, a distinguished senior journalist who has been associated with The Statesman (as sub-editor, Assistant Editor and Senior Editor) for almost his entire professional life. He was also Director of the Satyajit Ray Film and Television Institute from 2006 to 2009.

Other members of faculty include Smita Abraham, Assistant Professor of Communicative English, and practising senior journalists, from within The Statesman and outside. In addition, the SPJS arranges interactions between students and distinguished persons of various fields from India and overseas.

The SPJS, in partnership with the Konrad Adenauer Stiftung in India, organised a two-day seminar on electoral reforms in India, and a three-day Editors' Conclave on "Ethics and the Media".

The students had the opportunity to interact with a number of distinguished visitors during the year. Among them were Dr. Beatrice Gorawantschy, Resident Representative of Konrad Adenauer Stiftung in New Delhi; Mr. H.K. Dua, MP, Veteran Editor and former Media Adviser to the Prime Minister; Mr. B.G. Verghese, former editor, Hindustan Times; Dr. Peter Hefele, Junior Economist, Institute for Economy and Society, Bonn; Ms Valerie Miner, writer-in-residence, Stanford University, California and Ms. Mallika Kapur, Correspondent, CNN-IBN.
